Fun historical fact I just learned: In the 1940s there was a brief congressional push to give back Alexandria and Arlington to D.C., both of which had retroceded to Virginia in 1846. Apparently Arlingtonians were more amenable to the re-retrocession than Alexandrians.
Apparently the idea of re-retroceding Arlington and Alexandria to D.C. was being debated in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Congress. Some believed it would give D.C. a bigger tax base, others said Arlington would be a good place for factories. (Not of cheesecake variety.)
"Arlington: Good Location For Factories" is a pretty great slogan, I think.
And in news most will find unsurprising: in the mid-1990s there was apparently a modest effort to let Ward 3 vote on whether it should retrocede to Maryland.
Who knew President Taft was an ardent re-retrocessionist? He wanted to recreate the diamond.
I never thought I'd want to print a quote from President Taft on a t-shirt, but I'd do this:
Sheesh, Taft was like D.C.'s number one fan. Most elected officials these days just wanna declare it a swamp; he declared it the finest city in all the land.
There was a protest in 1930 to oppose any plan to re-retrocede Arlington and Alexandria to D.C. It went pretty much as you'd expect.
"[Arlington] County is bad enough now and it will certainly get worse if it goes under the District," said farmer in 1941.
