How To Do Audience Research(For copywriting newbies)

Copywriting is a form of communication that requires an audience.

That means u need to figure out who the hell you’re talking to before writing a word of copy.

There’re a number of ways to do this;

1/6
1. Your client already has a specific demographic they want to target.
Eg; Nursing moms with kids of 0-10 months old

So, you can simply look for forums, groups, communities, etc

Where they’re likely to gather, to know more about them.

2. On rare occasions where you can’t

2/6
..find a group, forum,etc

You can leverage the reviews for products similar to what u’re selling,

This will help u find common pain points that’ll be valuable 4 the copy

3. And if ur client isn’t targeting a specific audience,

Get on a call with them & have them explain,

3/6
..who their ideal customer is.

Use that explanation as the basis for ur research

To practice this, simply decide on an audience,

Eg; Nursing mothers with kids of 0-10 months old

And a product,

Eg; Baby bouncer

Then use the following questions to understand them more;

4/6
*How do they speak?

*What kinds of emotions do they express when talking about their interest/problems?

*Do they ever talk about ur product? If yes, what do they say?

*What other products are they talking about?

The answers to these questions will...

5/6
...lead you to new questions that will result in a deep understanding of your target audience.

And that understanding tbh, is one of the most crucial aspects of writing a successful copy.

Hope this helps.
