G7 Technology Ministers signed a joint declaration today under UK Chairmanship that agreed a set of Internet Safety Principles for G7 action. This is a significant step towards solid multilateral work as democracies together tackle online safety within a human rights framework /1
Fostering Human Rights Online form the first G7 Internet Safety Principle /2
Important emphasis on working with victims of online harm in the Second G7 Internet Safety Principle - a multi-stakeholder approach. /3
Focus on 'polluter pays' approach in the third G7 Internet Safety Principle which also takes the Carnegie/UK/EU approach to safer systems and processes as a route to safer online environment. Companies have to own the problem in the online environment they create. /4
Transparency and Accountability form the Fourth G7 Internet Safety Principle. Some 'Operational Principles' follow /5
Safety tech is a vital enabler of action on online harms and the G7 have agreed an operational principle to work together on this. /6
Principle 5 is the G7 asking companies to prioritise protection of children using their services. /7
G7 Internet Safety Principle 7 (got my numbers wrong) is media literacy, much exhorted but continually under invested in. Let's see if that changes /8
G7 Internet Safety Principle 8 is a reminder to the G7 themselves to involve young people more in policy making. /9
