BIPOC = Black, Indigenous, People of Colour is an abbreviation instead of “minority”, “racialized”, “underserved”. It is also Canadian-based term. It also de-centers Whiteness. +
When speaking of Black, Black is said. When speaking of Indigenous, that is said as well. No different than LGBTQ when speaking of a group of queer people. But use Gay, Lesbian, Bi when needed. +
I really don’t get the beef with this term. But it is generally folks outside of Canada that are loud about their hatred for it. A country that still calls the Indigenous “Natives”. 🙃 +
The UK used BAME. Canadians don’t use African-Americans. Words matter. Culture matters. Geography matters. +
Language changes. We don’t call those with developmental challenges R**arded. We don’t call people disabled. We don’t call Black people negroes. We don’t call those of Asian descent Or**ental. And it’s ok. +
If you don’t understand something, that’s ok. But if you don’t like or approve or want to “ban” use of a term without understanding why/where - challenge yourself as to why and what that sounds like. /fin
