In that segment where T*cker C*rls*n tells people to accost mask wearers, he says to say “YOUR mask is making ME uncomfortable,” and it’s wild how much of our society is built around maintaining the “comfort” of cis straight white capitalist people, systems and institutions.
As a trans person, I’m often aware that my existence and visibility in public spaces makes others uncomfortable. I still struggle with shame about the discomfort of others even though it’s not my fault, it’s their problem.
But rather than doing the work of confronting its transphobia, answering the question “How do I explain this to my kids?” with “By telling them that queer & trans people exist & deserve to be loved like everyone else,” society is turning the oppression of trans people into law.
See also the ways those who call attention to white supremacy are told to be quiet, are punished. The way that calling someone “racist” is often treated as far worse than actual racist behavior.
Anyway, the discomfort will continue until this society gets its shit together and confronts its own injustice and hypocrisy.
Whether we’re talking about wearing masks or, y’know, white supremacy or transphobia or ableism or what have you, the status quo’s right to “comfort” cannot trump the right of others to live full, free, safe, authentic lives.
