It would be remiss of me not to celebrate #LesbainVisibilityWeek happening this week! Though I'm not lesbian most people assume I am. But I have so many lesbians and WLW in my life who I could not live without so I'm dedicating this thread to them #Lesbainvisibilityday
and with my journalist hat on *clears throat* here are just some of the amazing lesbian and queer womxn of Camb's I've had the honour of covering over the years for @Cambslive!
First up learn about the revolutionary 70s phone line connecting rural queers https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/70s-lesbian-feminist-phone-line-18147065

Or you could read about @TheKiteTrust's Lara Jaffey who established Cambridge's first and only dedicated LGBTQ+ charity for youth AND the first pride. So many young people have a lot to thank her for https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/lara-jaffey-lgbtq-youth-kite-17089487
Cambridge's own @jacqui_gavin was kicked out of the army and then modelling due to transphobia, only to turn around and tackle the Aberdeenshire police force to make them more trans-inclusive. She's now responsible for diversity work all over the UK https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/meet-cambridge-trans-campaigner-honoured-19176441
From the past, @megeroberts helped reveal Cambs' own Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack) in the form of Save the Children founder Eglantyne Jebb, whose sexual identity was literally burned out of the history books https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/historic-heroine-eglantyne-jebb-gay-19755718
There are so few LGBTQ+ community spaces nowadays, especially for queer and gender-non-conforming women. We've lost so many over the decades but working so that they may be gone but not forgotten! @dehester's LGBTQ+ history trail helped with this write-up https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/lost-lgbt-gay-bars-pubs-17789059
It's important to recognise the queer and trans women who speak up so others don't have to, just like Nita here who shares her story of fighting to access gender-affirming surgery https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/trans-people-fundraise-surgeries-dysphoria-19303619
Lastly- though this isn't directly related, queer women's stories are intertwined with the establishment of centres like this one helping women survive and thrive after domestic abuse https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/cambridgeshire-womens-group-changed-lives-20037677
That's it from me- but don't forget to appreciate the queer women in your life because they honestly are wonderful
