Dallas called me when everything first started going down to try to convince me to join his new advisory board to offer recommendations for safer, equitable sets. I turned it down. Pretty clear now he wanted women who would act as shields and put their reps on the line for him.
Long before that he gave us a small amount of cash to shoot a sizzle for a fun women-centered ghost hunting reality show. But I came to understand that was more of a PR investment. I mean, they did a press release and everything which was confusing but I went with it.
Who does a press release for shooting a sizzle? It was about 1/20 of what we would have needed to shoot an actual pilot. But it also came at a time when the company seemed to be facing some bad press for being too bro and aggro. And here we were women who wanted to make a show.
Anyway after a sizzle was completed he dropped the project, backtracking on the contract that required him to actively shop it. I remember thinking how weird it was the absolute minimal work he was doing for it like it was a favor he was doing us instead of a contractual mandate.
It’s all PR! “Here’s a minuscule investment and a bunch of publicity to show that I’m not just a right wing dude making reactionary movies.” Never feels good to be used!
