The tactical battle between Zidane and Tuchel [THREAD]
Out of possession Chelsea kept their usual 5-3-2 shape. Madrid split their CBs wide in order to stretch Chelsea’s front two. This wasn’t effective however as Militao and Nacho are not amazing on the ball. Madrid tried a couple of other approaches
Kroos would drop deep to the left of the Varane while Nacho moved higher. Casemiro and Modric would occupy Kante and Mount, with Marcelo inverting, ready to exploit the space behind Kante. Kroos pulls out Azpilicueta and Vinicius pulls out Christensen. Marcelo free in half space
These moves tended to break down as Nacho was poor on the ball. When he received, that acted as a cue to press, at which point he would either pass back or play an inaccurate pass forward
Another approach they used to get Marcelo free in the half space: Casemiro and Modric both move to the right to attract Kante and Mount. Then switch quickly to the other side.
As this is done Militao, Varane, Nacho and Kroos form a back 4 to stretch Chelsea’s front 2. Kroos is under no pressure and can play to an unmarked Marcelo
Modric could also move to the left and use his dribbling ability to free Marcelo of Kante, while Vinicius pinned Azpilicueta and Benzema ready to threaten the space behind Christensen if he stepped out. Marcelo is therefore free in the half space again
This time Kroos drops into the RCB area. This attracts Kante and Modric then drops into the space he left. He then plays a 1-2 with Militao though the move breaks down as some of their players were poor on the ball
In general though Madrid struggled. Chelsea were very effective at blocking the centre for most of the game. Kroos and Modric had to drop deep a lot but this led to problems, mainly on the left
As mentioned, Marcelo was playing inverted so when Kroos dropped to the LCB position, Nacho moved to wing back. But given he’s not great on the ball and was on his weak side, Real struggled.
On the right when Modric would also drop deep. But with Kroos also doing so on the opposite side, this led to a lack of passing options in the centre
Chelsea:
When building up, Mendy would sometimes split the CBs, making a shape resembling a back 4. This stretched Madrid’s first line, causing Casemiro to step up on to Jorginho
It also meant Azpilicueta could receive without pressure from Vinicius, so Marcelo had to step out. Azpilicueta gets to the ball first and plays to Kante. Pulisic dropping deep has also pulled out Nacho and Chelsea can combine to get in behind the space he left
Kante and Jorginho would usually be marked by Kroos and Casemiro, but when Kante and Pulisic switched positions this would confuse Madrid.
Kroos covering the zone Kante was just in. Pulisic dropping deep drags out Nacho, but no one is tracking Kante’s run into the space Nacho left
Kante would also join attacks so Chelsea’s build up shape was more of a 3+1 at times. Pulisic would move into central areas and Kante the right half space
In this scenario, Vinicius moves to press Christensen who passes to Jorginho. This causes Casemiro to close him down, but one touch passing is Jorginho’s strength, so he was able to find Pulisic between the lines with ease, who then plays to Kante who can face forward
Kante and Pulisic would also make a wide triangle with Azpilicueta, with the first two often then rotating to get Pulisic free and on the ball
We also saw some of Chelsea’s build up mechanisms in place. Jorginho and Kante stagger (marked by Casemiro and Kroos), leaving space for a dropping attacker in the half space. Here it’s Pulisic
Jorginho and Kante stagger again, opening up the pass lane for Mount who drops and can turn between the lines
Pulisic receiving between the lines forces Varane to step out, and Kante makes a run into this space
When Rudiger was on the ball, whichever attacker was in the left half space would drop, dragging their marker and opening up space behind which could then be exploited by Werner, Kante or Chilwell
There are shades of this in the goal. Mount’s deeper positioning pulls out Militao, and Werner occupies Varane, allowing Pulisic to get into the space
Chelsea also had a few interesting transitions, as Madrid’s counterpress wasn’t efficient. 5 players all collapse on Kante, but not quick enough and Pulisic moves to open a passing lane. The defensive line has not pushed up
In the end Chelsea will be disappointed to draw, having won both the tactical battle and on XG. In fact Werner’s xG was higher than the whole of Madrid’s team https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😅" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß">
