Today I had the pleasure of joining @CSTvoice for their 2021 annual conference - in case you missed it here's what I had to say on schools' roles as civic leaders and Labour's vision for education #CST2021 👇
I want to thank school leaders and staff for the incredible work you've done to keep children learning and families going this year.
We must now work closely together to build a fairer, more equal and prosperous society making Britain the best place to grow-up.
A decade of @Conservatives leadership has seen rising child poverty.
Children in over-crowded housing, without devices for remote learning, with parents struggling to make ends meet, are the same children who have not seen their educational outcomes improve for a decade.
And now @GavinWilliamson has chosen to cut back the pupil premium which would deliver for exactly these chlidren, giving them the support they need so every child has a bright future.
Labour in government delivered huge declines in child poverty, transforming children's life chances.
That commitment to children's futures is one we will again take into office after the next election.
The schools system we have now is not a perfect one. Labour has long said schools should collaborate but @GavinWilliamson's top down solution cannot guarantee successful outcomes for all children, their families and communities.
I am making an open offer to parents, schools, trusts, local politicians to work with me to create a system that ensures every child receives a world class education with professionals who are genuinely empowered to transform lives.
As we emerge from one of the most difficult years we must grasp the opportunity to rebuild our country, to enrich the life of every child and give them the chance to fulfil their potential.
Our Bright Future taskforce will help us deliver a positive vision for children's futures.
