@VijayThaniMPP and @LoganKanapathi stood against a bill proposing #PaidSickDays for Ontario workers. Both come from ridings where working-class #Tamil people are made to die on the frontlines. We might be part of the same national struggle but our interests are very different.
And we can see this thread running all the way through history. In the 1970s, Tamil politicians who came to power on a platform of Tamil liberation supported the United National Party (UNP), the party that ushered neoliberalism into the island.
Those same politicians repressed struggles for the rights of workers and oppressed castes even while they rode the mass current for national liberation. Tamil students and workers took matters into their own hands and organized themselves at their schools and their workplaces.
Across Oceans, across diasporas, the narrow interests of the ruling class will always come at our expense.
