It's 2021 and the United States is one of the last countries in the world to guaranty paid family leave. The time has come [1/x]
The issue has been studied extensively and some key facts have been established: (1) kids do better when parents have access to paid family leave (2) parents are more attached to the labor force when they have access to paid leave (3) paid leave is something workers want [2/x]
Why would you oppose paid family leave? Maybe you think we can't afford it. We clearly can. Much of the cost is recouped in better outcomes for kids, greater productivity through increased job stability for parents, and what remains is a cost that provides enormous benefits [4/x]
Maybe you think if it was so good, employers would provide it on their own. It's complicated but the short answer is that we don't want employers competing on leave because we don't want workers sorting across jobs based on their desire for such leave--which is a distortion.
Maybe you think that if you want kids you should just stop working. While some parents might make that choice, realize that if all families chose to have someone stay home the economy would shrink by more than the covid shrink! Women have skills & experience that we need!
Tweet me your reason and I'll let you know why it doesn't negate the need for paid family leave. We need paid family leave. We needed it decades ago. We've suffered from not having it. Take this Biden proposal and make it law. Now. We can't wait any longer.
