/Today a dear friend who I consider like family was evicted from the shelter hotel she has been living in since June. There are so many hard traumatizing events that have happened to her over the last years. the shelter hotel she’s been staying at evicted her to the streets
/She was evicted because she missed appointments with the housing counsellor. Listed on the reasons for being evicted was because staff accidentally walked in on her when she was having sex with her partner in her locked room. Why would this be reason to evict?
/Staff enter rooms daily, ppl have no privacy & there’s no consideration of trauma histories. I don’t know a woman on the street who hasn’t been raped many times. She asked for privacy when staff entered her room to take her temperature & she wasn’t dressed...evicted for this
/She called me crying to help her find some where to go, she didn’t want to go back to the streets or an encampment. The hotel called the police on her when she got upset - she was being forced back on to the streets with no where to go. Over what?!?Who wouldn’t be upset!!!
/This is an org supposedly supporting women, throwing a BIPOC woman on the street. Her and her partner have had so many losses over the last months. There’s no sympathy for that. Today with the help of others we got her a spot in a shelter hotel. Having to pull strings.
/There’s people who don’t have ppl like me or others who can work the system. If she didn’t have us, she would have been back in encampment. And encampments are growing again. Ppl are easily evicted from shelters. The reasons for evicting her were not justified, it’s harsh.
/When ppl are struggling, you work to build relationships with them and meet ppl where they are at. I will never understand the holding power over someone, punishing them, evicting them. In a global pandemic, the decision to evict was of more value then her life. And for what?
