Reeling from speaking w/ @smc90, Editor in Chief at @a16z and showrunner of the No.1 a16z pod!!

Sonal is one of the best podcasters - the 'what's hype, what's real & give me the bottom line' is just iconic

Here are some useful tips growing a pod:

[A thread]
1. Show identity is everything.

It starts with being able to communicate what your show is, really, really well.

From description to one-liner. It needs to be BAKED into your jingle/trailer, for example.

Every episode is a sales pitch. Things need to feel intentional.
2. Best episodes = human episodes.

The a16z pod is brainy - but the best performing episodes are the ones w/ a tech x humanity cross-over.

Understanding emojis, for example, or tips on moderating a panel.

Same pattern at @thequest_pod w/ @garrytan and @jaesonma stories.
3. Think through episode release time.

Monday-Tuesday 9am, what do you typically listen to?

News probably.. You are anxious to get to work. You want insights.

Thursday-Friday night?

Weekend content, a narrative, a story that you can rewind and play in the kitchen...
4. Macro-timing is important.

How does Apple pick 'Featured' pods?

One of the things they care about the most: how does an episode align with the macro calendar?

Valentines Day, AAPI Awareness month, etc

There are ALWAYS things happening. Time your episodes carefully.
5. Analytics.

Identify growth from episodes that grow your unique listeners, not just 7-day listens.

Track 90-day and year-long listens per episode. Interesting things happen.

Content-market-fit happens when your new episodes catch up to your top-performing ones quicker.
6. Listeners like semblance.

Package similar episodes into a mini series and run through them in a batch.

It gives the listeners something to look forward to every week.

Monthly themes is a cool idea.
7. Understand your winners better.

Figuring out growth = pattern recognition.

Our top episode at @thequest_pod was w/ @mcuban, but why?

Maybe there's latent demand aside from MC, re: NFTs, @dallasmavs anthem controversy

Did listeners stay? Did they carry over?
8. Pod subscriptions? (see Apple and Spotify's new launch)

Super fragmented - @smc90, best pick is still @supercast

But appetite is picking up. Paid pods is becoming a thing!

Esp for hosts with a cultish following...
