Weeks reading primary and secondary sources of the mythology of Dallas to ironically accompany my photos in the book has turned into a much more terrifying picture of Dallas history than I ever imagined.
The first bill of sale in Dallas is for an enslaved woman, Jane Elkins, who took the name of the second owner who sent her to care for a widower friend with two kids. She eventually killed him in his sleep with an ax and became the first woman to be hung in Dallas.
Klan day at the state fair. At the time, one in three eligible men in Dallas was a member.
I went through FBI correspondence regarding the National Indignation Committee. I just thought the name was funny, but you could argue they created an atmosphere in Dallas that led to JFK's assassination and are the beginning of an anti-government far-right ideology we see today.
What I'm posting here probably won't make it into the book but things are starting to spill out of my ears so I'll keep this thread going for a while.
