Not trashing people with whom you seek common goals is neither rank conformism nor fear of cancellation, but tactical judgement and political good sense. That the left might be realizing this to some degree bothers a lot of people, but it was the right’s gospel during its ascent.
Of course you have to identify the red-lines you are not willing to cross. Not easy. There are tensions and conflicts that may erupt and weaken any coalition politics. But how you approach this is not usually a matter of principle, but a strategic question.
A striking feature of todays’ right is their complaints are abstract: a vague, but omnipotent sense of coercive menace, even as their engagement with practical and important political questions is anemic, and their coalition fractious, incoherent. Can’t remember a time like this.
