the current russell westbrook discourse is kind of weird—his incessant triple-doubles were a HUGE thing—he won MVP when he probably shouldn't have—then he kept doing it and his teams didn't really get any better and it's (rightly) seen as kind of an empty thing
I don't think people are taking what Russ does for granted as much as recognizing that he does it and all it really does is...get him triple doubles. if Steph's three-point barrages had led to zero championships by now we'd be tired of that too
Westbrook's triple-doubles are impressive by themselves but at some point they need to lead to something larger. He's been traded twice since winning MVP. That matters too.
He's posting Oscar numbers and getting Wilt results—which isn't even fair to Wilt, since he did win two championships. When he did it the first time it was amazing. The second time, OK. The third time? Sure, now win something. He still hasn't. We've moved on.
And at this point, triple-doubles just aren't that hard to come by anymore. Look at Luka. Look at Harden. Plus the same media asking these questions about Westbrook is the one that's drilled into us over and over that championships are all that matter. Well?
Russ comes off like someone who wants a redemption story without actually redeeming himself. I don't know. I once had a five-minute interview set up with him that I cut off after two because he clearly had no interest in it at all.
It's just strange to me that there are these pieces coming out now when he hasn't really changed and his triple-doubles have been celebrated. It'll be the first line on his Hall of Fame plaque. But at this point it's like, OK, what else though?
