Breaking news: ADL tracked extremely high rates of #antisemitism across the nation and region in 2020.
We tracked a 114% increase in #antisemitic incidents across our region, which serves all of #Ohio, #Kentucky, #WestVirginia, and Western #Pennsylvania
We tracked 43 #antisemitic incidents across #Ohio in 2020, the highest year on record in the State. This was a 72% increase over 2019.
We tracked 19 #antisemitic incidents in #Kentucky in 2020, also the highest year on record in the Commonwealth. This represents an 850% increase over 2019.
We tracked 101 #antisemitic incidents across #Pennsylvania in 2020, the third-highest ever recorded in the Commonwealth. PA had the fifth-most antisemitic incidents in the nation last year.
As it did with so many aspects of Americans' lives in 2020, the #coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted antisemitic attitudes and manifestations last year.
ADL's Center on Extremism tracked antisemitic conspiracy theories around the origins of the virus, government restrictions, vaccines, and other aspects of the pandemic. These hateful ideas fueled much of the antisemitic rhetoric and acts in 2020. https://www.adl.org/blog/coronavirus-antisemitism
Online antisemitic incidents increased in 2020 as people spent time in virtual spaces. The pandemic inspired a new tactic in antisemitic harassment, #zoombombing, in which perpetrators disrupt virtual meetings with graphic or hateful messages. https://www.adl.org/blog/how-to-prevent-zoombombing
Jewish institutions were targeted at a significantly higher rate in 2020 across the region, largely due to the rise in zoombombing as a tactic to harass Jews as they gathered and prayed remotely.
"We have called on elected officials, law enforcement, educators, civic leaders, and community members to do more to combat antisemitism, and there is no more time to waste." @James_Pasch
"As we have seen across the country, from the Tree of Life Synagogue to Poway to Monsey, the stakes are too high to allow anti-Jewish hate to go unchecked" @James_Pasch
While these numbers are troubling, we know they are undercounted. If you have experienced or witnessed a bias incident, please report it to @ADL online at http://adl.org/reportincident
