i’m about to be so earnest on main. look at this picture of my sister @maryamb giving the commencement speech for columbia b-school this year. this wouldn’t have even been in the realm of things we imagined possible when we were growing up. i’m so proud of her!
my sister has always inspired me but it’s so moving to see that she also inspires others. for so many years she was the only woman or poc in the room bc she refused to accept the idea that there were places we didn’t belong. she’s the most committed, tenacious person i know.
she paved a path wout even realizing she was doing it. when they asked her to make this speech she was surprised but i wasn’t bc i know how amazing her accomplishments are esp given the obstacles she faced. she’s always doing everything she can to make things better for everyone.
some people make change by being on the frontlines, through important activism and public displays of defiance but a lot of change comes from people like my sister who quietly embody change by how they live their lives, making room for the people who come after them by example.
so yeah, i’m super lucky to be her sister and i love her like an absolute dork. i’m so happy she’s being recognized with this honor. that’s all. thank you for indulging me.
