I finally saw the holiday inn video of the person having a meltdown and being filmed and I feel horrible for them. but can we talk about how one of the biggest issues is that people are not taught how to respond to someone who is ill? what would YOU do in that situation?
would you also record a video? would you walk away? would you call the police? find their manager? how would you handle it? because the person filming’s reaction is what many people would do, be in shock and act like the ill person having an attack is in the wrong.
I’ve watched it happen many times to others and it’s happened to me when I’ve had meltdowns and people don’t know how to respond. I know we all want to believe we would react better but many people don’t. so think about it now. we need to actively work to change out responses.
destigmatizing illnesses and disabilities also means that we have to learn how to respond to people in crisis with kindness and thoughtfulness, even when we’re uncomfortable or angry. be prepared to not know what to do, to be scared, and to still treat someone like a human.
