Vtubers live a strange existence in between dimensions. While a fully 2D entity might live in an idealistic world away from society& #39;s problems, vtubers are intimately affected by them, through foreign influence, companies, and just interacting with 3D people, both online and irl
I was thinking about the definition of idols and I think one of the most important aspects is an idol, as a representative of an ideal and a paragon to aspire to, should be idealistic, and should represent an idyllic goal, regardless of how hard it is to achieve in modern society
I hear vtubers say things like “I don’t necessarily want to get married, married ppl aren’t always happy, look at divorce rates,” and they’re not wrong, but it’s a bit uncomfortable to hear a 2D say that because I’m used to the 2D realm being an idyllic escape from society’s woes
An idol on the other hand would say “marriage is good, you should get married, find your one true love!” But many vtubers are not idols or idealistic, many are pragmatic, even cynical, and make realistic statements about the probability of a happy marriage in the modern 3D world
My point isn& #39;t to hate on vtubers who choose to make their stream a platform for discussion of issues like that, I think there& #39;s absolutely a place for those vtubers alongside more escapism-oriented ones, but I think that difference between vtubers and other 2Ds is interesting
