One thing that I think could have solved many of the political issues in Somalia is if there was a clear cut winner in the civil war, what happened was the various factions had a cease fire and no agreed upon political philosophy was formed. [Thread 🧵]
If the confederates and the unionists in 🇺🇸 had a cease fire, America as we know it today wouldn’t exist. The various somali factions didn’t make full peace and codified a resolution to solve the various grievances nor did one faction win and seized full power and ..
Codified it’s political philosophy into law, the ambiguity is the heart of the political instability, a cease fire only means the fighting has ended, the grievances and tension is still brewing for last 30 years..
One thing I will give credit to SL is for most part they decided to make peace within themselves and SNM had the force to bring the other stakeholders to the table. Originally they weren’t in favor of secession(more of autonomy similar to how Puntland is today)..
But one thing that SL and PL did is that they codified their political philosophies. Eventually for SL it became succession and for PL it became autonomy, very clear philosophies . For the rest of Somalia, nothing concrete was formed for most part is why ...
with each new president it’s a entirely new political philosophy and that‘s the main source of the political instability. The clan rhetoric is just identity politics used by politicians, the heart of the issue isn’t clans but there is no unified political philosophy.
Only a tribalist or an ignorant person would harbor on the clan politics, clan conflicts and politicization of clan identity is end result of divergent political philosophies(PP) . When they is ambiguity and a lack of a unified PP, clan politics is played...
Rather then sticking to discussing the differences and coming to a shared unified compromise. The longer the ambiguity continues, the more I fear each FMS will further distance themselves from Xamar and become Quasi countries within a country..
Some might want that for their pride and ego but for all purposes of a nation state, it’ll be a disastrous outcome: lower GDP, lower access to resources, vulnerable to foreign interests and multi-national corporations using the various states for their interests..
It already is happening at the moment but the worst case scenario of the Balkanization has yet to come and the end outcome wouldn’t help the citizen of Somalia , but will benefit the various nefarious actors who profit off of our instability for personal financial gain
Also , we have to divorce a politician from his clan identity. Farmaajo isn’t a marehan politician, he is a member of the Tayo Politcal party and he happens to descend from the Marehan clan. The identity of The politician shouldn’t dictate how you perceive his policies..
Obama is a Democrat who happens to be a African American , Tim Scott is a Republican who happens to also be a African American. Their identity doesn’t dictate how they will govern nor would Americans assume that. We Somalis should also develop that mindset..
Of divorcing the identity of the politician from his politics. No politician is your Abti or Adeer, even if he happens to be your biological Abti or Adeer, he is still a politician and his responsibility should be foremost to his constituents of his distract not you..
Wherever in the world you are residing at. So to conclude, #1. A unified political philosophy should be formed, so there is no ambiguity, #2. Divorcing clan identity from politics, and lastly being of good faith and looking beyond your own personal interests...
And establishing a anti-corruption philosophy so that citizens can trust the institutions and not have to resort to clans to govern them.[End of Thread 🧵]
