My Messy Replicant thoughts thread:
When I compare Replicant to Automata to myself, I’m so torn. I have a big bias for the storytelling and characters of Automata, but Replicant managed to make me love it’s cast just as much.
Personally, the combat edges out just a bit in Replicant’s favor, mostly because of how much easier it is to swap between all your stuff. Automata struggles there, since you’re usually picking a basic set, and swapping between those more limited options in-game.
As a complete experience, I think Replicant still struggles a bit, since a lot of the extra details are still in the novellas, while Automata feels much more “full” on it’s own.
It doesn’t help that Replicant’s quest story/design lacks in a lot of areas. There’s some diamonds in the rough there for sure, but I’ll take Automata’s over them any day.
All that said, the highs in both are hard to ignore. Replicant’s complete ending makes it easy to forget the lows. Automata feels more balanced in that kinda way, but the highs there are personal favorites for me.
