One misconception: officers are often criticised 'as someone in a position of power.' We're not. We've very little power. We're in positions of influence (v different!)The Uni, Council, Gov, don't have to listen to us! If power is the perception, skilful influence is the reality.

A bad president isnt one who makes bad decisions (we've got no red buttons to press!), it's one who forms bad relationships and isn't listened to.

And yes: even internally I have to pass everything financial through a board of 11 trustees and any action I take must be mandated by a Council of students (which is GOOD because accountibility is key!) No power, all influence.
