let's talk about speech disorders / speech impediments
what are speech disorders?
- speech disorders or speech impairments are a type of communication disorder where normal speech is disrupted, they affect a person's ability to form correct speech sounds.
most common types of speech disorders are: stuttering, cluttering, apraxia, dysarthria, articulation disorders and others
now let's talk about things that are ableist towards people with speech disorders:
- mocking people for stuttering / stumbling over their words
- making fun of people for not being able to pronounce certain words / sounds
- telling someone to go to a speech therapist
- getting impatient with people with stutters and finishing their sentences for them
- phrases like "did i stutter" "he did not stutter" etc.
- pointing out people's speaking patterns and ways of speaking
- assuming that people who have speech disorders are less intelligent than those who don't
- making fun of and pointing out when people speak too loudly / too quietly
- making fun of and pointing out when people speak too quickly / too slowly
- telling people to "learn how to speak properly"
