Women and people of color at @Gannett are underpaid by as much as $27,000, a @NewsGuild pay equity study has found.

Gannett has pledged to diversify its workforce. But you can’t do that without fair pay.

The median salary for journalists of color was more than $5,000 lower than the median salary for white journalists at the 14 @Gannett newsrooms in the study.

Women of color were treated even worse. They made nearly $16,000 less than the median salary of white men.
Unfortunately, @Gannett rewards loyal employees with low pay.

Women who worked at least 30 years for newspapers currently owned by the company had one of the largest gender pay gaps: $27,000 less than their male peers, our study found.
When @Gannett’s second-largest newsroom, The Arizona Republic/ @azcentral, pays a median salary nearly $30,000 higher to men than women and more than $25,000 higher to white employees than journalists of color, there’s a problem.
. @Gannett has hired many younger women and BIPOC journalists but failed to retain them.

Low starting salaries plus a lack of raises and promotions has led to high turnover, leaving few diverse employees who are experienced.
The numbers are clear. @Gannett newsrooms are overwhelmingly white. Few reflect the racial makeup of the communities they cover.
Unionizing lessens gender and racial pay gaps.

Women and people of color were paid more equitably in union newsrooms with salary scales in their contracts than in newsrooms that recently unionized and don't yet have contracts.

@NewsGuild will always fight for fair pay.
When it comes to equal pay for equal work, @Gannett can and must do better.

We call for company-wide salary transparency, swift action to correct pay disparities, higher wages and voluntary recognition for all employees who unionize.

Let's lead our industry.
