COVID lays bare inequalities that already existed in academia. Anglo-European academe kept publishing & presenting & administrating at its usual levels, & now, countries that hoard vaccines will begin pushing for superhuman workloads while scholars elsewhere fight for their lives
At some point there has to be a refusal to work in this capitalist academic system and re-focus energy and labour on building a society that actually serves the needs of the people. And, sorry, western academe is not altruistic it’s literally built on cut-throat competition & ego
And its institutions are built on wealth accrued from enslavement, dispossession of Indigenous people, exploitation of the poor. We are kidding ourselves when we pretend that academia serves the public good when it’s whole true orientation is to make money for unis & advance CVs
The folks I respect the most are the ones who don’t pretend. That’s where we begin: end the facade that this is about anything other than making $$, advancing careers, and ego. That’s when we can really start dreaming and building beyond academe — building something meaningful.
