I think it is a mistake for academic writers to not see themselves as writers. I think this is part of an overall issue of scholars seeing themselves as apart (e.g. not viewing their work as work).
Viewing my writing as writing (and even as creative work!) has been key 1/8

I highly recommend @eapickens new book "Make Your Art No Matter What." I plan to include it on the syllabus for my graduate feminist studies seminar next year (WMST 601) as its approach to helping work through creative hurdles is fantastic. 2/8
When I was a grad student, #BrianMartin was a visiting prof @IGSFMcGill - we started talking about writing and he recommended @WmGermano& #39;s work. @WmGermano calls scholars "professional writers of high-protein nonfiction"(150, From Dissertation to Book). We are writers. 3/8
This conversation made me think about the ways in which I was a writer. I wasn& #39;t always excited by advice pieces on academic writing, but I found books, podcasts, and articles that approached writing as a creative practice to be very helpful. 4/8
The amazing #LyndaBarry& #39;s work has helped me approach writing with wonder. I& #39;m a huge fan of her books "Making Comics" and "Syllabus"- both published by @DandQ. Even if you don& #39;t read or write comics, I highly recommend her work. 5/8
I also learned about @eapickens work thru @NicoleJGeorges & #39;s #SagittarianMatters podcast (I& #39;m a huge fan of the episodes in which she interviews artists, writers, + musicians about their creative practice). From following @eapickens work, I learned about the @MakeWorkPodcast. 6/8
and while it will be about a year until my book on accessible scholarship comes out (but yay it is in copyediting now!), work by the above discussed folks (and so many more!) has been so vital to my thinking through what it means to write. 7/8
and also while I apparently feel the urge to tweet about writing practices each april (just saw my old tweet from last year: https://twitter.com/aketchum22/status/1245723141353156609">https://twitter.com/aketchum2... ), this post is also to draw attention to @eapickens great new book (such a pleasure to read) 8/8
@raisecain this is the thread I mentioned I& #39;d write- also @FeliciaGabriele @kite_kite_ I thought of your writing/work when I was reading @eapickens book and thought you& #39;d enjoy it
