Try to come up with the death, co-morbidities and status of patient on admission to hospital for the age group of 00-50 years in Karnataka.

Been through the list, and it’s sends shivers down my spine.

Majority of death happening is in this group.

1/n
People have stayed back in home, even after testing positive.

Are turning up to hospital only after developing Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

A huge number in this stage require high-standard care.

That is not available in hospital, as all are filled.

2/n
Precious lives that could have been saved are being lost.

With each passing day, deaths in this group has drastically increased.

For instance, there were 3 deaths on 1/4/21. But by 19//21 death was 32.

About 80% have no co-morbidity. But are too late to show up for care.

3/n
Multiple deaths happen within a day or two of admission to hospital.

Meaning patients are showing up too late, almost after the setting in of ARDS.

Hospitals hardly have anything available to take care of such critically patients.

4/n
Spoke to a few doctors on frontline

Multiple patients, some as young as 18-20 years, have come in with severely low SPO2 levels. A 24-year F walked in with a shockingly low SPO2 of 18%

After much running around, doctors had a ventilator ready. But, patient died in 6 hours.

5/n
Another patient, a 26 F, working with a reputed MNC, walked with 28% O2

Expired in about a day of mechanical ventilation

Many of these patients are students and employees, far away from home

There is not even anyone to care for them

They are in hostels and PGs, all alone

6/n
More shockingly, some cases are being reported where patients (aged between 18-30 years) are home. Have families around.

Usually contract virus from their acquaintance group.

Develop symptoms, then begin downplaying it through self medication.

7/n
They resort to taking paracetamol, cough syrups etc.

Fear of repercussions at home and social stigma keep some away from seeking medical care.

Others consider themselves to be invincible, because they are young, and just isolate.

8/n
By the time they head out to seek medical care, they would have developed multiple complications.

Their vitals dipping by the minute.

And with the current surge and strain on health care, immediate medical care is just not available.

Golden hours for intervention are lost

9/n
Thus, it is crucial that youth & young are also educated of how to get themselves treated & monitored during home isolation

Their fear for repercussions & social stigma need to be addressed

They ought to be educated that deaths with new surge is high in 0-50 years group

10/n
Tele-consultation and medication is being used minimal

People rushing into hospitals too early or too late

If there is any symptoms, people need to consider it to be COVID

Head out, get yourself tested! Act, do not react

And consult doctors, through tele-consultation

11/n
Many youth still do not know about oximeter, and the crucial role it plays. Many in hostels and PGs don’t even have thermometers.

Youth need to be educated how to deal with this.

Everyone need to have the most aids at hand.

It’s on us to educate the younger population.

12/n
IT companies, Colleges & other institutions need to reach out & conduct a broad & far reaching education program

If we do not have youths realising impending danger, the death toll, which can perhaps be contained, will only keep increasing

It may even grow exponentially

13/n
Have done my best to capture the data-

It reads between 01/04/2021 to 26/04/2021.

Age Group is 00-50 years.

Conducted for state of Karnataka.
