Despite huge fans demonstrations there's worrying news in France that @girondins_en are on the brink of collapse.

Ligue 1 could be about to lose one of its most iconic, storied & popular clubs.

This won't just be a huge loss for French football but all fans of the game

THREAD
Concerns come off the back of their American owners 'King Street Funds' suddenly relinquishing control of the club who sit just above the relegation zone.

Now in the hands of locals courts, the future looks worrying for a club whose history is so rich https://twitter.com/GFFN/status/1385266815664799747?s=20
You see Bordeaux also known as "Les Girondins" are one of France's most successful clubs, having won the equal fifth most Ligue 1 titles in France.
The most famous of these came in 1999, with the Ligue 1 version of the "Agueroooo"

Away to PSG on the final day, Bordeaux needed to win to finish top.

With scores tied 2-2 late in the game it seemed over... until Pascal Feindouno did this in the 89th https://twitter.com/FB_WHISPERS/status/1134134876192616453
Their most recent came in 2009 where the club, led by top goalscorer Marouane Chamakh, stormed their way to the Ligue 1 title winning the last 11 games of the season. https://twitter.com/DanielJPinder/status/1083751995087962112?s=20
And this wasn't just any old title win, it was the title that finally broke Olympique Lyon's mid 2000's dominance.

Meaning Bordeaux became the first side other than Lyon to win France's top tier for seven seasons.
That same team followed their domestic success the next year with an incredible run in the @ChampionsLeague

Not only did they go all the way to the quarter finals, they topped the 'group of death' ahead of Juventus & a Bayern Munich side that ended up making it to the final.
But Bordeaux always had a long, rich history in Europe.

In the 1980's they qualified for Europe in every season but one, making it all the way to the 1985 European Cup semi-finals & the 1987 Cup Winners’ Cup semi finals.
However it's their run to the 1995 UEFA Cup final that's most iconic.

In the quarter finals a Bordeaux side featuring Christopher Dugarry, Bixente Lizarazu & most famously Zinedine Zidane came back from 2-0 to take down an AC Milan side that was arguably the best in the world.
In fact Bordeaux played a hugely important role in the career of Zizou, where across his 4 seasons at the club he scored 28 goals in 139 Ligue 1 appearances, this one's our favourite. https://twitter.com/girondins/status/1264164529107357696?s=20
Then of course there's the Bordeaux fanbase.

One of the biggest & best in France thanks in part to their active support group "Ultra-Marines" one of the oldest supporter groups in the country.
Well known for their TIFOs & choreographies, Ultras Marines have built a reputation for the unique & creative displays they produce on match days

Best exemplified by this brilliant "All colours are beautiful" show they did to celebrate their supporter friendship w St. Ettienne
But now, this 140yr old club that has become the pride of a city thanks its history of title wins, European appearances & supporter culture could be forced to fold.

All thanks to an American fund group who've only been in charge of the club for 2 years https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2021/bordeaux-on-the-brink-of-collapse/
As always, it's the fans who have come to the rescue of the club first, with supporters gathering in the city centre in their thousands to voice their anger as news of the situation emerged. https://twitter.com/ub87officiel/status/1386028046176632832?s=20
Even better is who he's called on as saviours:

"What's the region's economic force that can save the team & develop it? The world of wine & the owners of great vintages! I therefore call on any operation mounted by vineyard owners & am ready to lend my support with enthusiasm"
What happens from here is anyone's guess but for the good of the game, we stand with "Les Girondins" of Bordeaux!

A hugely important name in the history of club football, on & off the pitch.
