I'm kind of fascinated as to why Boris Johnson's ugly interior design is sticking in the public consciousness when all the dodgy covid contracts were largely met with ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
(please don't reply saying *you* cared, I know you did; I'm wondering why it never took off in the way that that ugly sofa has)
Is it that people understand the real luxury in getting your house redone in a way that awarding contracts and ~business arrangements~ are largely inaccessible? The hideous sofa is far more *available* as an idea than the dodgy deals made with mates.
Is it because the design was just so ugly, and one of the few expressions of class solidarity we have in this shitty country is laughing at rich people's hideous possessions and muttering "you can't buy taste"
There's definitely Duck Island overtones to the whole thing, the utter *frivolity* of it has really, really got people going.
And they really didn't help themselves by saying the original design was John Lewis (derogatory), when John Lewis is aspirational for most people.
And the tangibility of the matter really probably is the crux of it, but I feel like it's very much aided by just how disgusting the designs were. https://twitter.com/davideastUK/status/1386970399557263362
This is likely a part, too. It really is inexcusable getting your house redone. https://twitter.com/RoseTintMyWorId/status/1386971445927059458
DEFO likely to be a factor, there's been lowkey muttering about Carrie for a while, and this scandal is an excuse to go all guns blazing on the narrative https://twitter.com/AllyFogg/status/1386971294848200709
Possible and the redecoration narrative isolates Boris as a problem as opposed to *all of them* but I feel like there's more than just this going on, because it's really captured the imagination https://twitter.com/AScribbledEagle/status/1386972575847358465
It also really, really doesn't help at all that the excuse Boris has gone for is "it was a loan"; rich people claiming to be broke never plays well (we saw it in the expenses scandal), and that "loan" for some ugly furniture is close to many people's *entire mortgage*
