This thread was taken slightly out of context, leading to some confusion.

So for clarity:

- vaccines don’t promote mutation, transmission does
- transmission is reduced by vaccination and restrictions
- as we vaccinate more, we can restrict less, but it’s a fine balance https://twitter.com/DrDomPimenta/status/1382038012406685697
- high transmission increases the risk of mutants, and therefore the risk of reducing vaccine efficacy
- we can manage that risk in two ways:
1) vaccinate to the point of suppression globally
2) produce variant vaccines as they are needed, and then do 1 again.
- so far that risk has been only been convincingly demonstrated in lab settings (as the thread says)
- any new mutant will have to escape vaccination to a degree to spread
- we might not ever get to that stage, which would be great. But we can do more to reduce that likelihood
Anyway:
TLDR:
- get vaccinated
- follow restrictions until they are lifted
