Racists keep @-ing me with thus graph to downplay Aboriginal deaths in custody. I& #39;m no mathematician but let me break this down for them in digestible chunks in the hope that they sod off:
Firstly, the national population of Indigenous people is roughly 3%. This graph plots "deaths per 100 inmates". If the pop is 3% but Indigenous prisoners make up say 30% of prisoners, then the death rates are similarly disproportionate. Not that anyone should be dying in custody
In some jurisdictions, Indigenous people are imprisoned at a rate of 11x local population parity. This means more mob are dying in prison after being targeted by a racist system. It& #39;s not hard to understand
Secondly, this ridiculous graph just has "prison custody" rates. It doesn& #39;t include pursuits or apprehensions, for example, which are counted as part of Indigenous deaths in custody. We sadly have many examples of these deaths happening
So again I say learn to read graphs and stats before @-ing an Indigenous person wanting to discredit what is a very real issue in this country which governments have failed to act on. Stop being a racist slime ball. Real people are suffering. Cheers.
PS I know of at least one Indigenous person who also throws this graph around for his peanut gallery without stopping and interpreting it. I can only say academic quals don& #39;t always guarantee an intelligent take...
