This was really good analysis from Carragher last night. I think there are numerous reasons for what we’re seeing on the pitch here aside from ‘Harry Winks is shit’ / ‘our players have had mentality’ which we will see stated over and over in response.
1. Players here are being asked to do things they haven’t been asked to do (at least not consistently) for the last eighteen months. It won’t be a quick fix. It’ll take more than a week. They need coaching in a possession-based style.
2. Winks has been in and out (mostly out) this season and needs time to build his confidence and get back to where he was when he *was* doing these things, including vs Real Madrid, etc. He’s a squad player but he’s better than he showed on Sunday.
3. That doesn’t explain Hojbjerg, who was often hiding too. He looks a shadow of the player he did earlier in the season - fitness and confidence will be playing a part and not feeling fresh will feed into the lack of confidence. Again, he hasn’t become rubbish overnight.
4. The movement ahead of the players receiving the ball is also absolutely vital - that’s the one thing this analysis ignores but is really important. E.g. Son looks absolutely broken & was rarely showing for the ball or making runs in behind.
5. It’s wrong to just call the players cowardly/lacking mentality & demand they’re sold. It completely ignores 3 years of context. Yes, we have lots of average squad players to flog but this core is still excellent & will look even better with proper coaching. Revisit in a year.
It’s reeeeally annoying when you make a typo at the start of a thread, I, of course, meant ‘bad’ mentality.
