In my lifetime, The Oscars went from a cultural phenomenon to the movie business' annual wet fart.

Why? There are many opinions, and here's mine: the movie industry, once a staple of American ingenuity, is now just a high-budget content factory that churns out soulless junk.
As a result, no one gives a rat's ass about any supposed "stars" any more. The new stars are vapid famous-for-nothing idiots on social media who work for way less. Great films aren't made in this country anymore. We make garbage now. We make CG boom boom lizurd vs monke bullshit.
The public is fucking stupid and have no appetite for anything real. They're a bunch of little simp bitches who want cookie cutter garbage, and Hollywood is eager to give it to them. But many now get it from social media, video games, etc.
Basically, art is dead. Cinema is extinct. Creativity has been replaced by banal predictability. Everyone is fine with it, because when they are challenged they burrow into their online hugboxes to commiserate with their fellow shit-for-brains.
In a climate where film is dead and the only movies that make money are trash, why would anyone watch the pathetic dying gasp of the once-great American institution of Hollywood filmmaking? Why would anyone subject themselves to the depressing slog of it?
