Thinking about, if I had time, which directors' and actors' careers I would watch chronologically. Top of the list is Frank Langella. Anthony Hopkins is in the Top 5. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Also, Oprah. I'm fascinated by her crossover career.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling, who @BoyCowdy has called two of our biggest Hollywood weirdos. The Kirsten Dunst cycle from peak to fall is also great (and would give me an excuse to watch On Becoming a God in Central Florida).
I like the idea of watching people who haven't only traveled on an upward trajectory. Sometimes actors become more interesting after their "failures."
Directors would include Cassavetes, who I'm curious about but have little experience with. Yorgos Lanthimos. Spike Lee, who I had to grow up to appreciate. Alfonso Cuaron. Ang Lee. Only one away from a Villeneuve bingo (Prisoners). Spike Jonze.
Another interesting experience might be following screenwriters, and seeing how different directors and actors interpret a style, or director/screenwriters who only direct what they write (James Cameron excepted).
I was thinking about Tony Kushner, but his movie work has been exclusively with Spielberg (Munich, Lincoln, and upcoming films West Side Story and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which may be early enough that Spielberg drops it for something else).
Another actor would be DeNiro. I have a theory that he has been trying most of his career to break out of the Italian tough guy typecasting, and has done some really oddball things as a result (Brazil, Stardust).
Two things I found as a result of this tweet: I forgot DeNiro was one of the people targeted with bombs in 2018. Also: he endorsed Pete Buttigieg in the primaries.
Tilda Swinton's career would be a wild ride. I would say Tony Leung, but at age 59, he has 99 film credits. That seemed like a lot, but then I saw Tilda Swinton, at age 62, has 92.
Anyway, I'm just talking out loud because the only other person I see everyday 100% does not care about any of this.
Shohreh Aghdashloo is another, but mostly because I would listen to her read a phonebook. Speaking of phonebook readers: Ian McShane, please and thanks.
This thread will probably be an ongoing affair, because it's 1:00 AM, I am only half-functional, and all remaining brain matter needs to get back to grading.
