As journalists, its our job to show what's happening, not tailor it to preferences. If there are dead bodies waiting in line to be cremated, if people are dying without a bed, that's what we'll report/ show with proper advisories. Can't paintbrush reality because its distressing.
These calls to not show #cremations in #India on news is just another ploy to divert attention of from the #reality that crematoria are running full with people being denied dignity in #death. The #COVID19India situation is horrible and it has to be reflected on the news.
Yes its #depressing and the person reporting from the crematorium is not enjoying it. But that's what our management of the pandemic has led to. See what the situation is, fix responsibility and remember all this when you elect your leaders.
Reminds of the famous lines from The Newsroom: We're not waiters in a restaurant serving you the stories you asked for just the way you like them prepared. Nor are we computers dispensing only the facts because news is only useful in the context of humanity.
As responsible broadcasters, we avoid close ups of the dead, ensure identity isn't revealed & use editorial judgement to warn viewers about disturbing visuals & advise viewer discretion. But if the situation is #horrible neither will we blame the #system or pretend its all okay!
#Reporters and #camerapersons who report from these crematoriums remember these images because they hurt us too. Its not easy for a news crew to stand outside crematoriums and capture the distressing visuals and stories. So save those lectures about "Don't show this because..."
