My not so popular take on the Manitoba’s new restrictions.

The government did alright.

In the fall, we tried shutting down all the businesses, but covid cases only fell when we limited household gatherings.
Manitoba hasn’t released their numbers, but SK did, and if I recall, about 75% of transmission happen between household contacts.

So if you want to drive covid numbers down, we have to limit household gatherings.

These restrictions do that.
Further, they don’t take away low-risk outdoor activities like soccer, golf, ultimate. Plus, if you cancel low risk outdoor activities, people will just gathering in higher risk settings, like their backyards or worse, in their houses.
The lowered retail and gym capacities keep as many people employed as possible as safely as they can. And remember, household contacts are where the majority of transmissions happen. Plus, enforcement at these places is infinitely easier than households.
Wondering about the multiple households at a patio, or in the park, and not in our backyards?
Raise your hands if you’ve met in the backyard and gotten cold and went inside. Or used their washroom. Or ate food inside. Or turned around and found your kids have snuck inside to play with toys. These of all happened to me. But that won’t happen at a park or on a patio.
Church to 10 people is just enough to let the seniors without internet come. Livestream is no big deal for us now.
Are the restrictions perfect? No. Are they hard on all of us? Yes (especially on new parents). Will they work? That’s up to us. Will this pandemic end? Yes. All pandemics end. Want something to complain about? Write your MLA about paid sick leave for workers.
The variants are gonna win for the next few weeks. But if we limit our contacts, and get those vaccines in arms, then we’ll come out of these 4 weeks ready for a great summer (and hopefully with some ICU capacity).
We got this, friends. Go for walks, meet in the park, cheer your kids on at soccer, sign up for a beer league baseball team, go canoeing, go hiking, pick up bird watching, meet on patios with friends...
and before we know it summer will be here and we’ll be on the downside of the covid.
