On set chase was like, “pssst... Josh... is gnocchi a dumpling?”

And I was like, “bro me and @NHendizadeh need like 45 minutes to not come to a conclusion that’s how it works.” https://twitter.com/chasehilt/status/1386816405622845452
To me, ravioli is both dumpling and pasta. Whereas gnocchi is... not much of either? Not filled like a dumpling, not flat like a pasta. Just exists in a delicious, strange, pillowy purgatory.
I am also willing to denounce chicken n dumpling dumplings as non-dumplings. If a gnocchi is a dumpling, what are the similarites that bind it to, say, xiao long bao, manti, kreplach, pierogi?
I think the missing link here—the sasquatch of dumpling definitions—is the tamale. To me, tamales satisfy the definition of a dumpling. Dough stuffed with fillings and steamed—an obvious choice. But not all tamales are stuffed...
tl;dr: matzoh balls are tamales
