I miss Radio 3. I am listening to my radio 'cause it's time for Peter Jones show. Peter plays the best in music, he's the biggest sound around. And when I'm feeling lonely, Peter Jones my one and only, he plays everything for me right here on Radio 3.
I can't remember the rest
Then there was the Hitman, Hoseah Singende on the Jacking Zone. Chakanaka, chakanaka hutsi hwebraai hautosvori. Radio was a whole life event on its own. I could spend the whole day just listening to Radio 3, and trying to master song lyrics of course. When I couldn't I'd be upset
Admire Taderera used to host a morning show where he'd ask questions like "Where in the world would you be if you were in Kathmandu?" He had new questions daily, I just remember that one. I admired how he would move effortlessly from English to Shona to Ndebele and make it wow
Musi Khumalo nee Mlambo hosted the Thursday Morning Request show. Every week it would be dominated by love songs. People were in love I tell you. When they broke up they requested "Said I loved you but I Lied" by Michael Bolton. Love song which people didn't understand at all
A young me thought she was clever. Busy explaining to my mother that people were mistaken, the song was about love not break up since it says "...this is more than love I feel inside". Yeyi big mistake. Wena ungena ngaphi manje? Uhlakaniphele izinto ezingelancedo vele wena" 🙉
Radio was such an important part of my childhood. I suppose because TV wasn't 24hrs those days. If we didn't know song lyrics we would come up with out own, making sure we maintained the tune. Ahh we didn't have the Internet. Parade magazine would feature some I think.
"Last night the DJ saved my life with a song" was "As'kweledis 'amacimbi, 5 bhobho". "He keeps on knocking at my door" was "Ikhisimus' iqeda amadola." We were on an indigenisation drive long before we even knew the word. We were quite revolutionary and we didn't even know it.
