It's time for leaders to lead. A couple of years ago I had a conversation with a CEO about talking with his team. He was nervous: They were progressive, they had different terms and avoided other terms, they held strong beliefs. He knew they wanted him to talk about inclusion 1/4
But he was uncomfortable doing it. He was worried that he would use the wrong words and offend people. That they would call him out for being less progressive or "woke" if he didn't say things the way they would. That he wasn't as knowledgeable about these topics as they were 2/4
But he knew as CEO that he should lead that conversation. Even if he didn't have all the right words and would make some mistakes along the way. They needed to hear that diversity and inclusion were important to him. That his team mattered to him. That they should care, too 3/4
I heard the conversation was super awkward. And that the team saw it as his greatest moment of leadership in all his years as CEO. The time to lead is now, because it's uncomfortable not despite it. It's time to roll up your sleeves and make a difference 4/4
And if you're not up for it, it's time to get out of the way. 5/4
