Can we stop now?
Can we stop making every event a “Trial by Internet”?
If you haven’t watched the Holiday Inn Employee video please don’t.
Please don’t feed this culturally corrosive trend of making every issue a “film-able” “share-able” moment
It takes so little courage to hold a phone and try to provoke a “viral video moment “
It takes much more courage and character to step into connection and try to partner with someone who’s having a bad day, or a painful life
Stop filming peoples pain, start healing it
Not every moment of someone else’s weakness belongs in the public eye.

We will not heal our cultural ills by putting every moment under the microscope.

Rather we each need to see if we can create connection and meaning when someone else is scared, angry, shamed etc
What if we put the phone in our pocket and moved toward people to help.
What if instead of demanding our rights, we each, instead assumed responsibility for the tone of those moments and whether or not we move toward mutual understanding
Trial by Internet amplifies the division & erodes thoughtful consideration & genuine understanding

Suddenly a million people see a horrible 30 seconds and we all pass judgment on those we see

We know what category they fit in and we can fill in the blanks with our assumptions
We rob our world of the opportunity for genuine diversity because in a 30 second video we all know everything we need to know and we know what “should-have-been-done”

Can we stop now?
Stop sharing other people’s private pain
Stop assuming we know the story based on context-less video
Stop judging individuals we have never had conversation with
Stop letting Tweets and Headlines be our source of information
What if instead we share people’s strengths & best moments?

What if instead we saw people as “like us” instead of “the adversary”?

What if we made understanding more important than reacting?

What if we put our phones down & try to learn to solve problems instead of film them?
Can we stop now?
Can we stop making #trialbyinternet a thing?
