For my mutuals and followers that are confused or wanting to know about my recent retweet. La Perla in San Juan is a neighborhood in the city that not even Puerto Rican’s on the island go to.
La Perla gained popularity in recent years due to being the location for the video of “Despacito” by @LuisFonsi ft. @daddy_yankee.
With this pandemic, there have been many American tourists going to the island as an “escape” meanwhile COVID cases are rising on the island.
The topic of La Perla today began due to a Black tourist from Wisconsin was found dead after being reported missing. Tariq Quadir Loat disappeared Saturday night while at La Perla with some friends.
According to Police Commissioner Antonio LĂłpez Figueroa, the group were robbed that night by individuals in La Perla after buying drugs and attempting to take photos. https://www.elvocero.com/ley-y-orden/autoridades-buscan-a-turista-desaparecido-en-la-perla/article_f048eac0-a560-11eb-a7d0-c76059a04d09.amp.html
So why is it trending? Well....there’s people on Twitter who are calling Puerto Rico “racists” and want the US to intervene. Meanwhile, Boricua Twitter has been telling that La Perla is known as the projects and there are many Afro-Boricuas who live there. https://twitter.com/deviiette/status/1386668418095517696
Puerto Ricans on the island are not wanting anymore tourists, who are mostly American, to come to the island due to the COVID increase. Remember the island is small and the population is 3.194 million as of 2019.
When talking about race in the island, remember that race discussions here in the US are different in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. When you ask, they’re gonna say “I’m Puerto Rican/Boricua.”
