Used to be you couldn't get Uber or Lyft to STFU about self-driving cars, now both of them have sold off their AV units. It's all hype and will never become the mass-adopted technology they described. https://twitter.com/verge/status/1386787832874905604
Just like the adoption of human-driven cars, self-driving cars, if they take up any meaningful percentage of daily trips, will come at the cost of public space and individual freedom.
I assume these things, because they require pristine lane markings and signage, will be given dedicated highway lanes or entire local streets. These will be cordoned off from pedestrians and any other form of transportation, for your safety of course.
Well capitalized companies like Toyota and Aurora (formed by Amazon, Sequoia Capital, and Fiat Chrysler) are willing to play the long game of mass redefinition of city streets. The set-money-on-fire-to-burn-down-the-competition model that beat taxis is too short term.
