so i have a lot of more thoughts about the ’dallas stars outpost’ concept... would anyone like to hear them 👀
okay! so! i think it’s no secret that i’m a lover of worldbuilding & concepts and as i got the chance to do something *i* wanted to wear, i knew i wanted to go in that direction so bad, and i think it’s obvious that space is the logical connection for the stars.
there were a few ideas that i had in mind, but through a lot of sketching and thumbnailing we arrived at the idea of ‘dallas stars outpost’. i think i’d for a while both been very into star wars (which is one of my favourite things) as well the idea of an abandoned gas station.
something about creating a physical place that could in *some* reality be real really appealed to me, and i think it was also something perfect for merch as you could market it as something from that place. worldbuilding, essentially.
about the outpost itself: i really wanted to capture that feeling of a ‘travel stop’ where you can rest when going on your journey, and a place where no one really cares who you are, especially in connection to being queer. i think the idea of space and other worlds appeal to-
so many queer people, that it felt like a perfect theme to involve in a design meant for a pride night. i wanted to capture that feeling of being on a long roadtrip and you have to stop at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, but in space.
i wanted to capture a sense of ‘escape’ in the concept, saying to the audience that you belong here and this is for you, this is somewhere you can explore and be creative, this is a home for you, no matter what.
i also included intentionally ambigious figures within the piece to present the idea of a ‘queer’ invidiual, someone you’re not quite sure who they are: sort of someone anyone can reflect themselves upon.
the outpost itself is a concept i love: i have so many thoughts about how space hockey works, where you’d watch it, the restaurants and bars you can visit, the tourist shops.. etc. i love the idea that it’s sort of a space-neon-cyberpunk-cowboy-desert-hockey kind of town.
it’s a strange place with strange beings, where you quite don’t know what’s going on but there’s an atmosphere to be enjoyed and consumed, and you can’t help but be intrigued by it.
it’s a concept i have so many thoughts for, and that i wish i could have explored in more details because this- putting a hockey team in the context of another world is what i want to do.
