New APSR from @LeoBaccini & @SJWeymouth shows that manufacturing losses pushed whites toward GOP & white identity politics, but pushed Black & Latinos toward Dems. It& #39;s not race vs economics--they& #39;re linked!

The way to study this isn& #39;t a horserace where you put racial attitudes & economic circumstances in a regression and see which coefficient is bigger. It& #39;s that US economic decline is racialized. Deindustrialization and labor union decline + GOP strategy = white identity politics.
Obligatory self-promotion for me and @pfrymer. Revitalizing the labor movement is key to reducing white identity politics and building multiracial coalitions.
