(A very long) THREAD because things are just getting to me.

I got involved in politics to empower the communities I’ve lived in my whole life, to make things better for the people I’ve grown up with - politics isn’t a game to me, it isn’t about picking the least worst option
or settling for crap deals. It’s about thinking bigger, being bolder & fighting for the people I know & the place I love.

The communities that make up Glasgow Anniesland have felt the full brunt of cuts passed down from the SNP in Holyrood & implemented by the SNP in
Glasgow.

Community centres which have quite genuinely changed lives & have been there for upwards of 40 years forced to close, libraries that have inspired generations for almost 100 years shut without any community consultation or notification, well used sports facilities
with no date for re-opening, kicked into the long grass.

These decisions made by politicians who have for the most part never stepped foot in these communities unless it’s for a photo opportunity, statements sent out with no empathy & who just see a £ sign on a piece of paper,
with no thought of the people. The people who rely on these services.

I am sick of it - our city & our communities deserve so much better than this. These people have built these areas, my family are rooted in streets across Glasgow Anniesland.

It genuinely
upsets me to see these communities, many which contributed to our city being world renowned, many considered part of that famous Red Clydeside now forgotten about, they feel like those in power don’t care but still they haven’t lost their fight but many of their politicians have.
Things don’t have to be this way & that’s why it’s so infuriating, this is a choice made by politicians who are quite content to see our communities decline so they can carry on arguments of the past or grievances.

It isn’t fair, my friends, family & neighbours deserve better
than being played like a game, they deserve better than politicians who turn up when it’s convenient.

Seeing the people who have built these communities, who have given so much & played their part in changing lives having to walk away due to budget cuts is utterly
heartbreaking.

I know how resilient my communities are, but there is no doubt this continued decimation is threatening them.

I’ve had moments as a Councillor (& candidate) where I’ve thought about walking away from it all, I’ve had abuse shouted at me in a community centre by
another Councillor because I questioned their support for the cuts & I’ve had DMs from another Councillor with threats that made me so uncomfortable that I felt I had no other option to(through another councillor) make the chief executive aware but it’s my communities that keep
me going. The people I meet, the hard fought victories I’m proud to celebrate with them & the everyday things we may take for granted but to someone else it just about makes their week. They are why I keep fighting because I genuinely believe they deserve better.
You all see the pantomime politics within the City Chamber but what you don’t see is the bingo nights with my local neighbourhood watch, the hours spent at surgeries where you are someones last resort for help or the evenings spent in Community Councils or local meetings
listening to the things that actually matter to people every single day. That’s why I’m in politics, to take those voices to the City Chambers (& possibly Holyrood) & make their lives better by fighting for them.
