So today I learnt that the only Olympic Games that failed to carry the olympic flame were Sochi 2014, and I think only because of that Russia should had been banned from at least hosting any sport event.

Because I love olympic tradition, I'll explain:
In case you dont know, for every Olympic Games, a few months before starting, there is a traditional ceremony in Olympia, Greece, where the olympic flame is litted using only a parabolic mirror
(which is fucking awesome from a geometric/physics view, but that's not the point now)
And that's the olympic flame that has to be carried to wherever the games are hosted. In case the torch/cauldron goes out only that flame can be used to relit it.
To avoid having to host the whole ceremony again, a few copies of the first flame are carried in containers like this
Well, in october 2013, during the torch relay at the Kremlin the flame was blown out, and instead of following the protocol and brining one of the copies, russians decided it was okay to just use a cigarette lighter
Only one time had happened something like this, at Montreal 1976 a torch gone out was also relited with a cigarette lighter, but the organizers stepped in, doused it and relit it with the back up flame.
The russian organizing committee is the only one in the history of Olympic Games, both ancient and modern, who didnt use the olympic flame.
I personally think that explains a lot about Sochi, or at least is a very meaningful event
