I barely even eat red meat I just think there is a misconception being spread. Marxists/radicals should work scientifically from the ground up to support ecologically-sustainable social reproduction & defend where it makes sense the lives & production of the working class
We defend the production of use-values which do not require imperial extraction or domestic exploitation; on this count sustainable grazing in core and periphery alike are far better than lab meats or compulsory vegans vended by Swedish nudniks
This is the contribution of anti-colonial third world Marxism, and the strain of romantic Marxism and its fellow thinkers from the Luddites to Thompson to Morris: that progress should be placed under extreme suspicion guilty until proven innocent
This hypothesis that we can ‘simply’ take over technology seems to not so much put the cart before the horse as to forget to even identify where the cart and horse are and if we know how to drive them. Who are ‘we’ that wants to ‘take over’ geoengineering & lab meat?
These calls emerge almost uniquely from the first world, not the third, because people understand that entirely correct as mechanisms for an assault on their world, to Postone emissions reductions or that have nothing at all to do with the agrarian environmentalism of the poor
The idea of “take over” of these technologies uniformly ignores their colonial implications and sidesteps the serious question of the existing capacity of anti/systemic core forces to retool capitalist technologies. Us and what army? This is voluntarism on methamphetamine
Since there is precisely 0 capacity of anti-systemic forces in the core to steer the development of these technologies in an anti-colonial & anti-capitalist manner, we should oppose them. WITBD? Oppose them.
