Yes,Santorum dismisses Native Americans & ahistorically includes himself-an Italian-American-in the "we" of an "unchanging" American culture. But his claim that the U.S. was settled "predominantly" by people seeking religious freedom is wrong too.Jamestown predates the Pilgrims.1) https://twitter.com/JasonSCampbell/status/1386685340522536961
The early Virginian settlers came for economic reasons. They were looking for gold and found tobacco. This was also true for most later European immigrants. There WERE minorities fleeing religious or other persecution, but that's not the main story of immigration from Europe. 2)
Even religiously-motivated early New England colonists mostly didn't believe in "religious freedom", but wanted freedom & dominance for THEIR religion and set up a quasi-theocratic order. Most colonies & some states after 1776 & even 1787 had established churches. 3)
Maryland was set up as a Catholic colony, but Protestants gained control & marginalized Catholics. Jews were barred from office-holding here until the 1820s. Santorum's "Judeo-Christian" claim, including Jews in the "we" is another ahistorical one. END
