ok, but, hear me out: this thread... /1 https://twitter.com/anamardoll/status/1386088526807060481
...& this thread abt that other thread-- are the exact sounds my brain makes when watching ~especially~ 'western' style animation, & are exactly, EXACTLY the reason i default to suspicion/aggression when i see ANY rubber hose animation... /2 https://twitter.com/inspectornerd/status/1386376487893311489
...for as much as i lov 'steven universe', & how much it as a series grew over time into queer, anti-racist, & mental wellness iconography now, white diamond ? & spinel in particular ?? they trade in exactly these aspects of the legacy of western animation & had me like... /3
...in a many ways theyre send-ups to the legacy/history of animation, something animators are explicitly told we SHOULD revere, that thats how we respect the workers who came before us, & some fans of animation feel genuine awe & nostalgia toward this era & typification... /4
...that strong sense of loyalty to the history of western art THRU animation scares tf outta me, bc this industry is as much a source of stereotyping & bias-driven propaganda as any form of art, so i feel its vital to respect when ppl feel strongly averse to it... /5
...& i personally am deeply invested in doing the work to undo & help heal the psychic harm to the collective unconscious these tropes, types, & signifiers have done, regardless of 'intent' /6
